Sustainable Christmas: Brownies in a Jar (free download)

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

This is such an easy and fun gift for the baker (or non-baker) in your life! Simply layer up the ingredients and attach my illustrated label. All you need is a glass jar, which is perfect for pantry storage or for storing your brownies afterwards. You can easily make multiple of these for gifting, just line your jars up and create a production line. Happy non-baking!

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups plain flour (or GF flour)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ⅔ cup cocoa powder

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • ¾ cup caster sugar

  • ¾ cup chocolate chips

  • ¾ cup walnuts, roughly chopped (or white chocolate chips)

Instructions

  1. To make 'Brownies in a Jar' you will need a 1 litre glass jar. Wash well to sterilize and allow to dry completely before starting.

  2. In a small bowl, mix the plain flour, salt and baking powder together.

  3. Carefully spoon half of the flour mixture into the bottom of the glass jar. Gently move the flour around so that you have an even layer.

  4. Spoon the cocoa powder on top of the plain flour in the jar and spread around to create another even layer. I find a spatula helpful to clean the edges of the jar.

  5. Spoon the remaining flour mixture over the top.

  6. Continue to create the layers in the following order - brown sugar, caster sugar, chocolate chips and finally walnuts.

  7. Close the lid of the glass jar (if you have any extra space at the top of the jar, simply top up with extra walnuts).

  8. Print out my recipe card below and attach to the jar. If you would prefer to write your own label please see instructions in notes.

Notes

Preheat oven to 170 degrees celsius. Place all ingredients into a large bowl. Add 150g of melted butter & 3 lightly beaten eggs. Mix well. Pour the brownie batter into an 18X28cm baking tin. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.
